Join Our Board of Directors

Heart of Cartm is governed by a working board. We're looking for people who want to help shape where this organization goes.

Real governance, for a real community organization.

Heart of Cartm has been keeping materials out of Tillamook County's landfill for over 25 years. We run a creative reuse store, a community studio, a Repair Café, and a growing slate of programming—and we do it as a small team that relies heavily on community investment.

Our board is a working board, which means members don't just advise—they engage. You'll help set direction, maintain financial health, support fundraising, and bring your networks and expertise to bear on the real challenges of running a small nonprofit in a rural coastal community.

This isn't ceremonial. It's meaningful, manageable, and genuinely matters to what we're able to do.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Backgrounds and skills that would help us most.

We welcome board members from all walks of life, and we don't expect any one person to check every box. What we're looking for is people who are genuinely invested in this community and willing to show up consistently.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Finance & Accounting

Comfort reading financial statements, understanding nonprofit fund accounting, or experience with budgeting and fiscal oversight.

Community Networks

Deep roots in Tillamook County, Wheeler, or the north coast. Relationships with local agencies, businesses, or community organizations.

Legal or HR

Nonprofit law, employment, contracts, liability—any legal background is valuable on a working board.

Fundraising & Development

Grant writing, donor relations, event fundraising, or experience building a nonprofit's revenue base.

Marketing & Communications

Audience engagement, brand strategy, social media, storytelling, community outreach—helping people find us and care about what we do.

Sustainability & Waste Systems

Knowledge of recycling infrastructure, circular economy, environmental policy, or reuse programs. We love a true believer.

Time commitment

Board members typically give 4–6 hours per month. Monthly meetings are held on the 3rd Thursday. Between meetings, engagement varies by role and project—but we aim to keep it realistic for people with full lives.
